Rice Black Bug Seen In Sorsogon

Researchers and agricultural workers in the Bicol region recently confirmed the presence of the notorious rice black bug (RBB) in four municipalities of Sorsogon but the current level of infestation is not serious.

Recent reports of infestation and outbreaks show that the RBB (Scotinophara coarctata) is moving towards Luzon. The RBB was spotted last in Bohol seven years ago before it was observed in Sorsogon specifically in the municipalities of Gubat, Prieto Diaz, Bulan, and Matnog
The first RBB infestation in the country was observed in Palawan where it sparked an outbreak in1982 damaging some 4,500 hectares of rice lands. After a decade, the RBB invaded several areas in Mindanao including Zamboanga City, Cotabato, and Sultan Kudarat. In 1998, it was spotted in Negros Occidental and Siquijor.

Mr. Anacleto Esplana, Regional Crop Protection Center (RCPC) technician in Region 5, said farmers in the affected municipalities are alarmed by the RBB infestation.

However, experts from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), University of the Philippines Los Banos (UPLB) and PhilRice said that the current level of infestation – 2 to 3 bugs per hill – cannot cause significant crop damage and therefore it should not cause panic among farmers.

Agricultural workers, however, are advised to continue monitoring the situation to prevent outbreaks and mitigate the movement of RBB to other areas in the province and the rest of Luzon.

“They should be trained on how to monitor the situation, when to say it is below or above pest level and what management options to apply,” said Mr. Dong Arida, PhilRice crop protection expert who conducted several studies on RBB together with IRRI scientists at the height of the RBB outbreak in Palawan in 1982.

Dr. Vic Gapud of UPLB said the RBB thrives abundantly in marshy and muddy areas such as rice fields. It moves around and does not stay in just one location and its flight activity is affected by the lunar cycle. The RBB stays at the base of rice plants and sucks the sap, causing the plant to dry up. Heavy infestation could lead to total crop damage.

Currently, the RCPC is conducting a massive information campaign to educate extension workers and farmers on the management of RBB and to prevent its spread in nearby areas. PhilRice, through its branch in Los Banos, supports this activity by providing technical expertise and information materials on the management of RBB.

Since December, PhilRice researchers Mr. Josue Desclasota and Mr. Eliseo Batay-an have been conducting a series of trainings and seminars in the area to help educate extension workers and farmers on the management of RBB. Among the management options being recommended are synchronous planting, flooding, light trapping, and preservation of natural predators.
