Agrisector drawing support from other countries

Agriculture Secretary Domingo F. Panganiban announced that the agriculture sector is drawing more support from many countries as the government is starting to revive the rubber production in Mindanao and the development of biofuel sources.

Panganiban has called for support in expanding the rubber production in Mindanao and the development of plantation for biofuel sources, including the expansion of maniculture.

Two embassies have offered to help the department's agricultural development projects, an indication that the government is on the right track on its development strategies.

British Ambassador Peter Beckingham called on Panganiban on Tuesday to familiarize with DA's policies, thrust and priorities. The British Ambassador also inquired on what areas the British Embassy could assist the agriculture sector.

Meanwhile, American Ambassador Kristie Kenney on Wednesday during a courtesy call on Panganiban expressed hope for the continuation of the study grant under the Fullbright Scholarship Program and projects on biotechnology. These projects sourced its funding from PL 480.

The American and British Ambassadors expressed their support to the department's priority programs in Mindanao. Both have expressed interest the measures the country has been undertaking on Avian Flu prevention.

Secretary Panganiban outlined the measures being adopted to prevent the entry of AI and the measures to be adopted when AI comes. These measures, according to Panganiban, have the cooperation of the Local government units (LGUs) and the full support of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and the Cabinet.

The revival of the rubber industry in Mindanao, according to Panganiban, will provide employment to rural people in the area. The Secretary also stressed the need to assist the livestock and fisheries development.

According to Panganiban, the DA requires more budgetary support, with front loading budgetary allocation in the first semester of the year and reduction in the quantity of rice and corn importation.

Panganiban was elated when two ambassadors called on him to inquire on what areas their governments can extend assistance on specific projects the department is focusing to improve the agriculture sector in the country.
